Wagenknecht joined the ruling SED just months before the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, then rose through the successor PDS and later The Left, where she led the Communist Platform and served as parliamentary co-chair from 2015 to 2019. Her 2011 book Freedom instead of Capitalism critiqued Germany's euro-crisis response through an ordoliberal lens, though her economic views have shifted since. She helped launch Aufstehen in 2018, a movement outside traditional party structures, and made waves with controversial statements on immigration and gender care. By 2020 she was less active in the Bundestag - holding no committee seats from 2021 onward - but remained a media fixture. Growing conflicts inside The Left led her to walk out in October 2023 with a small group of allies and found Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht, a Eurosceptic populist party that ran her as chancellor candidate in 2025. It narrowly missed the 5% threshold, and by November 2025 she had resigned as leader, holding no public office.
