Biography

About

Mengele held doctorates in anthropology and medicine before joining the Nazi Party in 1937 and the SS in 1938. He served as a battalion medical officer early in World War II, then transferred to the concentration camp system in 1943 and was assigned to Auschwitz, where he joined the team of doctors performing selections and carried out genetic research on prisoners. Ten days before Soviet forces arrived, he was transferred to Gross-Rosen.
