About

Born in 1859, Dewey came up through Michigan academia convinced that democracy and ethics were the same problem. In 1896 his paper on the reflex arc helped launch functionalist psychology—the idea that mind was action, not static structure. By the time he reached the University of Chicago he'd founded the Laboratory Schools, a live experiment in progressive pedagogy where children learned by doing and every lesson doubled as a test of his theories.
