About this person

Born in Oslo in 1959 to a diplomat father and politician mother, Stoltenberg studied economics at the University of Oslo and led Labour's youth wing in the late 1980s. He entered government as a state secretary in 1990, moved through the ministries of industry and finance, and became prime minister in 2000 at 41 - cast then as Norway's answer to Tony Blair, a cautious centrist reshaping social democracy. After losing office in 2001, he returned for a second stint from 2005 to 2013. In 2014 NATO tapped him as secretary general, and the alliance extended his term four times as he oversaw the largest defense spending surge in a generation. He returned to Norway's finance ministry in February 2025, the same post where he started nearly three decades earlier.
