Mark Rutte was born 14 February 1967 and started in business management at Unilever before entering national politics in 2002 as part of Jan Peter Balkenende's cabinet. He won the VVD leadership in 2006 and led the party to victory in the 2010 general election, becoming the first self-described liberal prime minister in the Netherlands in 92 years. His first government collapsed in April 2012 over budget negotiations, but the VVD won again and his second cabinet with the Labour Party became the first to complete a full four-year term since 1998.
