About this person

Bolsonaro left the Brazilian Army in 1988 after detention for criticizing military pay in print, then spent 27 years in the Chamber of Deputies building a reputation for national conservatism. He survived a stabbing during the 2018 presidential campaign and won the runoff that October. His presidency saw falling crime rates but also the rollback of Indigenous protections and widespread criticism for downplaying COVID-19 while the death toll climbed. After losing to Lula in 2022, his supporters stormed government buildings on 8 January 2023. Military testimony revealed he had planned a self-coup. Indicted in November 2024 and convicted the following September, he violated pre-trial conditions, attempted to remove his ankle monitor, and exhausted his appeals. He is now in prison, with temporary house arrest granted in March 2026 for health reasons.
