About

Born in 1947 in Belo Horizonte, Rousseff turned socialist as a young woman and joined Marxist guerrilla groups resisting the military regime after the 1964 coup. She was captured, tortured, and jailed from 1970 to 1972. After her release she settled in Porto Alegre, helped found the Democratic Labour Party, and rose through state government as treasury secretary and then energy secretary. She switched to the Workers' Party in 2001 and became Lula's energy minister in 2003, then his chief of staff in 2005. She won the presidency in 2010 and narrowly again in 2014.
