She held power twice as Valide Sultan to the same son — a mentally unstable ruler who needed her steady hand — making her the only woman in Ottoman history to occupy that throne twice for one sultan and the first to hold it twice at all.

Biography

About

Halime Sultan became consort to Mehmed III around 1570 and bore Mustafa I, a son whose fragile mind would shape her late career. She lived through seven sultans' reigns, watching the palace shift around her. When Mustafa took the throne in 1617, his instability forced her into the role of Valide Sultan and de facto co-ruler until he was deposed the next year. He returned in 1622, and so did she, resuming power until 1623. She was a central figure in the Sultanate of Women, the decades when mothers and consorts steered an empire from behind latticed screens.
