Born in 1485, Dragut rose through the Ottoman naval ranks under the tutelage of Hayreddin Barbarossa, who would eventually concede his protégé had outstripped him. Suleiman the Magnificent appointed him to a string of commanding posts: Bey of Algiers and Djerba, Beylerbey of the Mediterranean, and finally Pasha of Tripoli. In that last role he didn't just govern—he rebuilt Tripoli into one of North Africa's most striking cities.
