About
Hafez al-Assad rose through the Syrian Air Force and helped bring the Ba'ath Party to power in a 1963 coup. He participated in a second coup in 1966, becoming defense minister, then staged a third in 1970 to seize the presidency for himself. He pivoted Syria's foreign policy toward the Soviet Union while painting himself as defender of Palestinians, fought Israel in the October War of 1973, and intervened in Lebanon starting in 1976.
