The woman behind Syria's ruling dynasty for five decades. As wife to Hafez al-Assad and mother to Bashar, she stood at the center of the family that held Syria from 1971 until its collapse in 2024.
Anisa Makhlouf was born on 5 November 1930 and became First Lady of Syria in 1971 when her husband Hafez al-Assad took power. She held that position for nearly three decades until his death in 2000, when their son Bashar succeeded him as president. The family's rule extended another twenty-four years before the regime fell in December 2024. She died on 6 February 2016, eight years before the end of the system her family had built.
