About

Born 11 September 1965, son of Syria's ruler Hafez al-Assad. Trained as an ophthalmologist in London through the early 1990s until his elder brother Bassel died in a 1994 car crash, pulling him back to Damascus as heir. Entered the military academy, took charge of Syria's occupation of Lebanon in 1998, and became president on 17 July 2000 after his father's death. Early hopes for reform died in 2001–2002 crackdowns that ended the Damascus Spring; his rule grew more repressive than his father's, marked by summary executions, forced disappearances, and pervasive surveillance by Ba'athist secret…
