Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege was a German philosopher, logician, and mathematician who taught at the University of Jena from 1848 until his death in 1925. His Begriffsschrift developed modern logic, and his Foundations of Arithmetic became the seminal text of the logicist project — the attempt to ground mathematics in pure logic. In papers like "On Sense and Reference" and "The Thought", he argued for Platonism over psychologism, introduced the distinction between two types of meaning, and advanced descriptivism.
