He led an army across a continent, stormed Jerusalem, and then refused to wear a crown where Christ had worn thorns — choosing instead the title Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre, a gesture that secured him rule of the first crusader kingdom without claiming kingship outright.
Godfrey was the second son of Eustace II, Count of Boulogne, and came into his own in 1076 when he inherited Bouillon from his mother's family. By 1087, Emperor Henry IV had made him Duke of Lower Lorraine as reward for backing him during the Great Saxon Revolt. In 1096 he joined the First Crusade alongside his brothers Eustace III and Baldwin, fighting through Nicaea, Dorylaeum, and Antioch before playing a key role in the capture of Jerusalem in 1099. When Raymond IV of Toulouse turned down the offer to rule the newly won kingdom, Godfrey accepted and took the title prince rather than king.…
