Queen consort of Portugal and France (1498-1558)
She was queen twice — first of Portugal, then of France — but neither crown was hers to keep. Eleanor of Austria's marriages were diplomatic tools, her life shaped entirely by the ambitions of her younger brother, Charles V.
Born 15 November 1498, Eleanor was the eldest child of Duke Philip of Burgundy and Queen Joanna of Castile. In 1518 she became Queen of Portugal through marriage to King Manuel I, a role that ended with his death in 1521. Nine years later she was married again, this time to King Francis I of France, making her Queen of France from 1530 until his death in 1547. After Francis died she held the Duchy of Touraine in dower. Her younger brother was Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and it was his power — not hers — that dictated where she went and whom she wed. She died 25 February 1558.
