Born 18 July 1501, daughter of Philip I and Joanna of Castile, Isabella grew up in Mechelen under her aunt Margaret's care, tutored by humanists including Juan Luis Vives and Adrian of Utrecht. In 1514 she married Christian II of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden in a strategic alliance, though the union stumbled early over his Dutch mistress Dyveke Sigbritsdatter; after Dyveke's death in 1517, the marriage steadied and Isabella became regent in 1520 and the king's political advisor.
