Born 18 July 1501, daughter of Philip I and Joanna of Castile, Isabella grew up in Mechelen under her aunt Margaret's care, tutored by humanists including Juan Luis Vives and Adrian of Utrecht. In 1514 she married Christian II of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden in a strategic alliance, though the union stumbled early over his Dutch mistress Dyveke Sigbritsdatter; after Dyveke's death in 1517, the marriage steadied and Isabella became regent in 1520 and the king's political advisor. When Christian II was deposed in 1523, the family fled into exile across England, Saxony, and the Habsburg Netherlands. Isabella pressed his case hard, appearing at the 1524 Imperial Diet in Nürnberg to seek support for his restoration. Her travels through Protestant territories left her sympathetic to the reform movement. She died 19 January 1526; she had taken both Protestant and Catholic communion, but the Habsburgs insisted she died a fervent Catholic.
