Last Incan emperor
The last Inca emperor to hold real power, reigning barely a year before Spanish forces captured and killed him — his execution in 1533 closed the door on an empire that had ruled the Andes for a century.
Atahualpa took the throne in April 1532, adopting the regnal name Caccha Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui Inca to honour both the caccha idol and the great emperor Pachacuti. His reign lasted only months. Captured by Spanish conquistadors, he was executed on 29 August 1533 as part of the conquest that would dismantle the Inca Empire. He died at roughly thirty-one, the final ruler to wield actual authority over a civilisation the Spanish were already tearing down.
