Catherine was born on 14 January 1507, a daughter of Spain who became Queen of Portugal through her marriage to King John III. She spent years at the Portuguese court as consort, her life shaped by the rhythms of dynasty and duty. After John's death, she might have faded into the background of dowager life. Instead, in 1557, she was called back: her grandson Sebastian had inherited the crown as a child, and Catherine stepped in as regent.
