Intanta of Portugal, Princess of Asturias, Duchess of Milan
She was heir to Portugal's throne as a child, then married the man who would become Philip II of Spain — and died at seventeen after giving birth to his son.
Maria Manuela was born on 15 October 1527, the eldest daughter of King John III of Portugal and Catherine of Austria. For the first eight years of her life she stood as heir presumptive to the Portuguese throne. She became Princess of Asturias and Duchess of Milan when she married the future Philip II of Spain, binding two of Europe's great dynasties. On 12 July 1545, at seventeen, she died — her son born, her future king husband left to reign without her.
