About

Eisenhower graduated from West Point in 1915 but spent World War I training tank crews stateside, denied his request for Europe. Between the wars he climbed through staff positions until 1941, when rapid promotion put him in command of Allied invasions across North Africa, Sicily, France, and Germany—Operation Overlord in June 1944 broke the war open. After serving as military governor of occupied Germany, Army Chief of Staff, and NATO's first supreme commander, he entered the 1952 presidential race to stop an isolationist rival and won two landslides against Adlai Stevenson.
