The South African producer who turned amapiano into a global sound. Themba Sekowe built a career threading house, gqom, and afropop into hits for Wizkid, Drake, and Major Lazer, then rode the amapiano wave he helped architect with Kabza De Small into a movement that redefined African club music.

  1. Amapiano was a term that we used to diss a song that didn't fit neatly into the gqom or house music categories, which were the popping mainstream sounds back then.

  2. At some point, I knew that gqom would reach its sell-by date because it was fast-paced and dark. I find that once a genre becomes dark, the songs end up sounding the same.

  3. I used to deejay on weekends, and I opened a tuck shop at home just to have a cash flow. At school, I used to sell sweets and lollipops.

About this person

Born 15 November 1987, Sekowe started at Kalawa Jazmee Records and made his name engineering crossover bangers - Uhuru's "Y-Tjukuta", Kwesta's "Ngud'", Busiswa's "Lahla", tracks that married South African rhythm to pop structure. The production credits piled up across continents: Drake, Black Coffee, Major Lazer, Era Istrefi. He founded BlaqBoy Music and pivoted hard into amapiano, collaborating with Kabza De Small, Focalistic, Young Stunna, and the late Mpura and Killer Kau. That shift locked him into the genre's ascent, and now his catalog sits at the hinge where local tradition met international airplay.
