Mary Frances Reynolds broke through at eighteen as Kathy Selden in Singin' in the Rain (1952), a part that demanded she hold her own opposite Gene Kelly despite minimal dance training. The 1950s brought a run of musicals and comedies, including Tammy and the Bachelor (1957), where her performance of "Tammy" hit number one on the Billboard charts. Her portrayal of Margaret "Molly" Brown in The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964) earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
