Born Dino Paul Crocetti on June 7, 1917, he broke through in 1946 as half of Martin and Lewis, the nightclub-to-film comedy juggernaut that ran white-hot until an acrimonious split in 1956. The solo years that followed proved the real range: he became a recording force with "That's Amore," "Everybody Loves Somebody," and "Volare" among the 50 million records sold worldwide, and anchored the Rat Pack alongside Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. in the Las Vegas machine. From 1965, The Dean Martin Show made his lounging, half-awake charm a television fixture, and from 1974 to 1984 he roastmastered celebrities and politicians with the same unflappable ease. He died on December 25, 1995, having logged 85 film and television productions and left behind the template for playing it cool.
