About this person
Christopher Lynn Hedges was born September 18, 1956, and became a Presbyterian minister before turning to freelance war reporting in Central America for The Christian Science Monitor, NPR, and The Dallas Morning News. He joined The New York Times in 1990 and ran its Middle East and Balkan bureaus through the wars in the former Yugoslavia, contributing to the staff entry that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting on global terrorism. He resigned from the Times in 2005, two years after receiving a formal reprimand for public statements opposing the Iraq War, and moved into alternative media - a 14-year run as a Truthdig columnist, hosting On Contact on RT America, and writing books including War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2002), a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America (2007), Death of the Liberal Class (2010), and Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (2012) with cartoonist Joe Sacco. He now writes a weekly column at Scheerpost and hosts The Chris Hedges Report.
