Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo was born 11 March 1976 and started working as a DJ in 1994, spending a decade in relative obscurity before the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy put him in wider view. He launched his own imprint, Soulistic Music, to release his self-titled debut in 2005, an album that wove R&B and jazz through the house template and set the template for what followed. Nine studio albums later, the accolades stacked up: eight South African Music Awards, four DJ Awards, two Metro FMs, and a Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album. The name Black Coffee now moves crowds on multiple continents, but the architecture of the sound - warm, patient, rooted - hasn't changed.
