About this person
Bernadette Soubirous was born 7 January 1844 in Lourdes, a town in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Between 11 February and 16 July 1858, she reported apparitions of a figure who asked for a chapel at a nearby cave-grotto and identified herself as the Immaculate Conception. A canonical investigation declared her account "worthy of belief" on 18 February 1862, and the site became the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, now drawing five million pilgrims a year. In 1866 she joined the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, taking the religious name Marie-Bernarde, and lived out her years at their convent. She died 16 April 1879; the Church holds her body remains internally incorrupt. Pope Pius XI beatified her in 1925 and canonized her in 1933.
