A miller's daughter who saw a young lady at a grotto eighteen times in 1858, and when the vision named herself "the Immaculate Conception," turned a cave in the Pyrenees into one of the world's busiest pilgrimage sites.
Bernadette Soubirous was born 7 January 1844 in Lourdes, a town in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Between 11 February and 16 July 1858, she reported apparitions of a figure who asked for a chapel at a nearby cave-grotto and identified herself as the Immaculate Conception. A canonical investigation declared her account "worthy of belief" on 18 February 1862, and the site became the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, now drawing five million pilgrims a year.
