Bennett started releasing music as "Bene" in 2017 with "Tough Guy", then built a following in Auckland with singles like "Glitter" and "Soaked". By 2019 she'd dropped two EPs - Fire on Marzz in June, Stella & Steve in November - and taken home three major Aotearoa Music Awards including Single of the Year. "Supalonely" broke wide when TikTok users turned it into a dance-challenge phenomenon, and she swept the same three awards again in 2020. Her debut album Hey U X arrived that November. She kept landing tracks on Triple J's Hottest 100 countdowns and released a third EP, Lychee, in March 2022. Five years after the first record, she followed with Ur an Angel I'm Just Particles - a title that splits the difference between cosmic and self-deprecating, which is more or less her lane.
