Born in Daman, India, Shirley Setia moved to Auckland as a child and spent her university years at the University of Auckland uploading covers of Hindi film songs to YouTube. The bedroom recordings caught enough eyes that Forbes tagged her "Bollywood's Next Big Singing Sensation" before she'd set foot in a studio. In 2020 she crossed into acting with Maska, a Netflix release that marked her first screen role. Two years later came the big-screen debut: Nikamma in 2022, followed that September by the Telugu film Krishna Vrinda Vihari.
