Born into a senatorial family on 19 September 86, Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus held a string of offices under Hadrian and married the emperor's niece Faustina. Hadrian adopted him shortly before death in 138, and the new emperor earned the name Pius either for forcing the Senate to deify his predecessor or for sparing senators Hadrian had condemned.
