14th Roman Emperor (117–138)
The emperor who quit conquering. Hadrian pulled Rome back from Trajan's overreach, poured resources into walls instead of wars, and spent more time touring provinces than governing from the capital — a restless, Greek-obsessed autocrat whose Senate despised him even as later ages called him one of the good ones.
Born in 76 in Italica, Hispania, Hadrian rose through marriage to Vibia Sabina, Trajan's grandniece, likely pushed by the empress Plotina. He became emperor in 117 and immediately had four senators killed, earning the Senate's permanent hatred. He abandoned Trajan's eastern conquests in Mesopotamia and Armenia, choosing fortified borders over expansion — Hadrian's Wall in Britannia became his signature. He rebuilt the Pantheon, promoted Athens as the Empire's cultural heart, and traveled obsessively. His relationship with the Greek youth Antinous ended in the boy's death and a sprawling cult.…
