Heir of the Roman Empire as the adopted son of Emperor Hadrian, and father of emperor Lucius Verus
He was chosen emperor and died waiting. Hadrian adopted Lucius Aelius in 136 and made him heir to Rome, but he didn't live to see the throne.
Born on 13 January 101, Lucius Aelius Caesar became father to the future Emperor Lucius Verus but spent most of his life outside the center of power. That changed in 136 when Hadrian, childless and searching for succession, adopted him outright and named him Caesar. For two years he stood first in line to rule the empire. He died on 1 January 138, just days before Hadrian himself would go. Antoninus Pius replaced him as heir and took the purple that same year.
