Sixth Roman Emperor (68–69)
He ruled Rome for seven months and died for it. Galba took the throne after Nero's suicide in AD 68, the first domino in the Year of the Four Emperors — a span of civil war that saw four men claim power and three lose their lives for it.
Born into wealth on 24 December 3 BC, Servius Sulpicius Galba climbed the Roman cursus honorum — praetor, consul, governor of Gallia Aquitania, Germania Superior, and Africa. He stepped back during Claudius' later years when Agrippina the Younger rose, but Nero later sent him to govern Hispania. When Vindex's rebellion collapsed and Nero killed himself in June AD 68, Galba seized the opening with Praetorian backing. Age and apathy gutted his authority; favorites ran the show while he lost the streets and the Guard. On 15 January AD 69, Otho had him killed and took the purple himself.
