About

Born 4 September 1824, Bruckner came up as an organist before turning to composition, where his symphonies and sacred music—Masses, Te Deum, motets—pushed Austro-German Romanticism to its outer edge through dissonance, unprepared modulations, and polyphonic density. The gap between his harmonic radicalism and his personal humility baffled contemporaries; Hans von Bülow called him "half genius, half simpleton." Critic Eduard Hanslick and the Brahms camp attacked the works' scale and repetition, and Bruckner himself kept reworking them, often with colleagues' help, leaving multiple versions in d…
