He turned Mozart into new wave and made the Billboard summit in German - something no one had done or has done since. "Rock Me Amadeus" hit No. 1 in the U.S. in 1986, proof that a language barrier is no match for a hook that cuts through.

About this person

Johann Hölzel, born in Austria in 1957, took the stage name Falco and struck first with "Der Kommissar" in 1981. The synthesizer-driven track built momentum across Europe, but it was "Rock Me Amadeus" five years later that made him singular - the only artist to top the American charts with a German-language song. More hits followed: "Vienna Calling", "Jeanny", "The Sound of Musik". By the time his career closed, his estate would count 20 million albums and 40 million singles sold, numbers that still make him Austria's best-selling recording artist. He died in a traffic collision in 1998, two weeks before his 41st birthday. "Out of the Dark" was released after he was gone.
