Andrea Bocelli was born 22 September 1958 and broke through in 1994 after winning the newcomers' section of the 44th Sanremo Music Festival with "Il mare calmo della sera". The win opened the floodgates: his album Romanza became one of the best-selling albums of all time, Sacred Arias became the biggest-selling classical album by a solo artist in history, and "Con te partirò" — a duet with Sarah Brightman — turned into one of the best-selling singles ever recorded.
