Andrea Bocelli was born 22 September 1958 and broke through in 1994 after winning the newcomers' section of the 44th Sanremo Music Festival with "Il mare calmo della sera". The win opened the floodgates: his album Romanza became one of the best-selling albums of all time, Sacred Arias became the biggest-selling classical album by a solo artist in history, and "Con te partirò" - a duet with Sarah Brightman - turned into one of the best-selling singles ever recorded. He duetted with Celine Dion on "The Prayer" for Quest for Camelot, winning a Golden Globe and earning an Oscar nomination, then landed a Grammy nod for Best New Artist in 1999 while simultaneously holding the top three spots on the US Classical Albums charts. Italy made him a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit in 2006 and elevated him to Knight Grand Cross in 2025; Hollywood gave him a Walk of Fame star in 2010. By 2019 his album Sì debuted at number one in both the UK and US, the first time he'd topped those charts, fifteen solo studio albums and nine complete operas into a career built on a voice that Celine Dion said sounds like God's.
