Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was born in Naples in September 1696 and trained as a lawyer before turning to the priesthood. In November 1732 he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer — the Redemptorists — and spent three decades writing, preaching, and revising his Moral Theology, which went through nine editions in his lifetime. He was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata de' Goti in 1762. His devotional works, especially The Glories of Mary and The Way of the Cross, became fixtures of Catholic practice.
