Pope 1153–1154
The last pope to ever take the name Anastasius — a choice no successor has touched in nearly nine centuries. His sixteen-month reign in the 1150s closed a chapter in papal nomenclature that has stayed closed.
Born Corrado Demetri della Suburra around 1073, he rose through the Church's ranks in an era of fractured Christendom and rival claims to Peter's throne. On 8 July 1153, well into his eighties, he was elected head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States. His papacy lasted just over a year. He died on 3 December 1154, leaving behind a name that would become a relic: no pope since has chosen Anastasius.
