About this person
Peter Lombard was born in Italy around 1096 and rose through the ranks of scholastic theology in Paris, the intellectual center of medieval Europe. Sometime in the mid-1100s he compiled the Sentences, a systematic collection of theological questions and authoritative opinions that organized Christian doctrine into a single, teachable framework. The work became the required text for theology students across the continent, studied and commented on by nearly every major thinker for generations. In 1159, a year before his death, he was named Bishop of Paris. He died on August 21 or 22, 1160, but the Sentences outlived him by centuries as the backbone of medieval theological education.
