Aldous Harding

A New Zealand songwriter whose voice seems to shift shape mid-phrase, whose performances unsettle as much as they entrance. The lyrics don't explain themselves and the videos feel like fever dreams, but since 2014 the music press has been trying to pin down what makes her so strange and so necessary.

About this person
Hannah Sian Topp was born in 1990 in Lyttelton and took the stage name Aldous Harding when she released her first album in 2014, drawing on English folk traditions. The self-titled debut caught enough attention that 4AD signed her and sent her to Wales to work with producer John Parish. Party arrived in 2017 and The Guardian called her one of the most original songwriters working. Designer followed in 2019 - warm, funny, simply extraordinary according to critics - and two months later Metacritic ranked it the seventh most acclaimed album in the world that year. The single "The Barrel" won New Zealand's APRA Silver Scroll Award. Warm Chris, her fourth record, came out in 2022 and kept the trajectory steady.
