Something wrong? She turned raw heartbreak and fury into a 33-million-selling grenade that made "You Oughta Know" a generational scream and "Ironic" a punchline everyone still argues about. The angst was real, the voice unmistakable, and for a few years in the mid-'90s she owned alternative rock in a way few women had before.

For a long time, I didn't understand the idea of not being able to appeal to a human heart. And then Marianne Williamson (if I can dare drop her name)...
When [Jagged Little Pill] came out, I feel like I immediately went into survival mode to keep the 'overwhelm' that comes from being famous at bay.

Alanis Morissette started in Canada with two dance-pop records no one remembers, then moved to Los Angeles and recorded Jagged Little Pill in 1995. That album became one of the best-selling of all time and won five Grammys including Album of the Year - she was the youngest winner in that category. She followed with Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie in 1998, shifting to a more experimental sound, and won two more Grammys that year for "Uninvited". By 2002 she was producing her own records, starting with Under Rug Swept, and she kept releasing albums into the 2020s. She holds the record for the most number ones on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart among female soloists, and VH1 ranked her the 53rd-greatest woman in rock and roll.
