About this person

Born in Reykjavík on 21 November 1965, Björk Guðmundsdóttir started performing at 11 and by 21 was fronting the Sugarcubes, the alternative rock band that got her out of Iceland. When they split in 1992, she went solo and released Debut (1993), Post (1995), and Homogenic (1997) - albums that pulled electronica and avant-garde music onto pop charts and made her unmistakable voice a signature sound of the decade. The experiments kept coming: the glitch textures of Vespertine (2001), the all-voice Medúlla (2004), Biophilia (2011) with its custom iPad app. After her longtime co-producer Mark Bell died, she worked with Arca on Vulnicura (2015) and Utopia (2017), then produced Fossora (2022) herself for the first time. She acted too - won Best Actress at Cannes in 2000 for Dancer in the Dark - and has moved 40 million records, with 22 UK top 40 hits and 16 Grammy nominations, the most in the alternative category. In 2015, MoMA gave her a retrospective.
