Born in Paris in 1934, Bardot trained as a ballerina before starting to act in 1952. And God Created Woman in 1957 made her an international sensation - Simone de Beauvoir called her "a locomotive of women's history" and the most liberated woman in France. She won a David di Donatello for The Truth in 1960, starred in Godard's Le Mépris in 1963, and earned a BAFTA nomination for Viva Maria! in 1965. Across 47 films and more than 60 songs, she became a symbol of the sexual revolution and a major pop culture figure. In 1973 she retired from entertainment entirely and founded the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, dedicating herself to animal rights with the same fierce outspokenness - earning UNESCO and PETA honours, but also multiple fines for inciting racial hatred through her criticism of Muslims in France. She died on 28 December 2025.
