Persian Muslim theologian (853–944)
He gave his name to one of Sunni Islam's three main theological schools — a framework for interpreting faith and reason that still structures how millions understand doctrine today.
Abu Mansur al-Maturidi was a Hanafi jurist and theologian who lived from 853 to 944, taking his name from the Māturīd district of Samarkand. He authored Kitab al-Tawhid and Tafsir al-Maturidi, a classic exegesis of the Qur'an, works that codified a theological method balancing scriptural authority with rational inquiry. That approach became the Maturidi school of kalam, which stands today alongside Ash'arism and Atharism as one of the three pillars of Sunni theological thought.
