Zhu De was born into poverty in 1886 and adopted at nine by a wealthy uncle, an education route that opened a military academy and a career as a warlord in a rebel army. He joined the Chinese Communist Party and rose to command the Eighth Route Army through the Second Sino-Japanese War and the long civil war that followed. By the time the People's Republic was founded, he was both a military commander and a high party official - ranked first among the ten marshals in 1955. He chaired the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress from 1959 until he died in 1976, seventeen years into the state he helped create.
