Lin Biao commanded the field armies that delivered the Communist victory in the late 1940s, taking Manchuria, Beijing, and the southeast coast from the Kuomintang, earning him third rank among the ten founding marshals. After 1949 he withdrew from the center, holding vice positions through the 1950s until becoming defense minister in 1959. In the early 1960s he engineered the personality cult around Mao and was elevated during the Cultural Revolution to Vice Chairman - the only one, Mao's designated successor. On 13 September 1971 a Trident carrying Lin and his family went down near Öndörkhaan, Mongolia; Beijing's account says he was fleeing a botched coup, others say he ran from a purge he saw coming. He was condemned posthumously as a traitor and later officially paired with Jiang Qing as architects of the Cultural Revolution's violence.
