Yuan Shao rose as a general and politician in the late Eastern Han dynasty, controlling the vast northern territories as civil war fractured the realm. In response to Dong Zhuo seizing Emperor Xian and holding him hostage in Luoyang, Yuan spearheaded a coalition of warlords to oppose him, but internal division tore the alliance apart before it could succeed. By 200 he had amassed enough strength to challenge Cao Cao, his chief rival, launching a major campaign that culminated in the Battle of Guandu — where he was decisively defeated.
