Nagatomo came through Meiji University and broke into FC Tokyo's first team in 2007, locking down a spot so quickly that the national team came calling a year later. He left for Italy in 2010, first Cesena, then Inter Milan, where he stayed seven seasons and racked up over 200 appearances, winning a Coppa Italia in 2011. Stints at Galatasaray and Marseille followed - he collected back-to-back Turkish titles in 2018 and 2019 - before he returned to FC Tokyo in 2021. For Japan he became a fixture across five World Cups, three Asian Cups (winning in 2011, runner-up in 2019), and the 2008 Olympics, eventually becoming the country's second-most capped player. The trophies scattered across three countries, but the through-line held: he kept showing up, kept starting, kept lasting.
