10th King of Korean Joseon Dynasty (1476-1506)
The 10th king of Joseon, remembered as perhaps the worst tyrant in Korean history — two bloody purges, hundreds of women seized for the palace, a school turned into his pleasure ground.
Yi Yung was born 2 December 1476, eldest surviving son of King Seongjong and Deposed Queen Yun. His mother's execution became the catalyst for what followed. He ascended as Joseon's 10th monarch and ruled in stark contrast to his father's liberal era. He launched two purges, appropriated Sungkyunkwan — the national academy — as personal entertainment space, and ordered women taken from across the peninsula to serve him. Overthrown and despised, he died 30 November 1506 without the temple name granted to legitimate kings.
