About

Yi Hyeol was born on 28 August 1457, the younger son of Crown Prince Ŭigyŏng and grandson of King Sejo. When his uncle King Yejong — a ruler weakened by illness — died, the throne passed not to a direct heir but to him. He took the name Seongjong and became the ninth monarch of Joseon. He ruled until his death on 29 January 1495.
