Deokhye was born 25 May 1912 at Changdeok Palace in Seoul, the youngest daughter of Emperor Gojong and his concubine Yang Gwi-in, who received the title Boknyeong after the birth. Japan initially refused to recognize her as a princess - wrong mother, not a queen - but relented in 1917, entering her name into the imperial family's registry. Her father adored her and opened the Deoksugung Kindergarten in Hamnyeong Hall specifically so she could attend with other girls from noble families. In Korea she carries the title Ongju, reserved for daughters of concubines, not Gongju, which belongs to queens' daughters. She died 21 April 1989.
